Explore Ruse

People have built settlements by rivers since ancient times and to this day, Ruse is one of the most popular and biggest cities on the Bulgarian side of the Danube River.  

The city started as a buzzing industrial metropolis for the country in the late 19th and early 20th century. Along with the trade of goods came the exchange of ideas and practices from Western Europe. 

To this day, Ruse showcases Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic, Rococo, Secession, and Neoclassicism that swept Western and Central Europe. This gives the city its beloved nickname “Little Vienna”.

Popular SIGHTS in Ruse

By simply taking a stroll through the city center you’ll find many of the architectural gems that have survived through the centuries. Still, there are a couple of Ruse attractions and highlights that will round out your visit and bring you closer to the Ruse spirit.

Regional History Museum

Originally meant as a castle for Alexander of Battenberg, nowadays houses multiple expositions.

Getting There 

  • Getting to Ruse is quite easy by bus or by train from Bulgaria’s bigger cities – Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, and Varna.
  • There is public transport in Ruse, so it’ll be quite easy for you to get around.
  • If you prefer to drive, the city is easy to navigate and there are plenty of parking spots.

Comfort & Leisure 

  • After all, Ruse is located next to the river, so beware of mosquitos. We recommend you bring bug spray and wear longer clothes during the evenings.
  • Embrace the slow pace of the city. Ruse is a relatively small town, so take comfort in the relaxed atmosphere.
  • Support the locals by choosing to shop small. 

What to Eat 

  • As you can imagine, Ruse’s local cuisine centers around its location on the Danube river and the wild-caught fish. 
  • Some of the highlights of Ruse cuisine are walnut-stuffed carp and the rich, umami fish soup. 
  • Many vegetarian and vegan Bulgarian staples are available at any restaurant.
